This book, which has been published in conjunction with Prague City Gallery’s retrospective exhibition Antonín Kratochvíl: Photo Essays, presents a cross-section of the highly expressive and evocative work of one of the most world’s most distinctive photojournalists and portrait photographers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. This selection from Kratochvíl’s photographic work reflects many of his lifelong subjects, such as man’s relationship to nature, human conflict, people ravaged by war and repression, and human visions for the future. The texts by Pavlína Vogelová and Michael Persson are divided into two parts. Vogelová shows how Kratochvíl’s work relates to today’s burning social issues while also emphasizing the value of the photographic record and the concomitant moral and artistic reputation of the photographer. In his essay “To a Friend, from a Friend ,” Persson – who worked on Kratochvíl’s earlier monographs Broken Dream: 20 Years of War in Eastern Europe (1997), Vanishing (2005), and Persona(2006) – takes a literary look at the unique, modest, empathetic, and exceptional person that is Antonín Kratochvíl by describing the delights and dangers of world-class photographic work.
